Mumbai-Dehradun Express fire: 9 killed
Nine killed as Bandra-Dehradun Express catches fire in Thane, Maharashtra
Thane (Maharashtra): At least nine passengers, including a woman, were charred to death when a fire engulfed three coaches of the speeding Mumbai-Dehradun Express near Dahanu town in Maharashtra's Thane district early Wednesday.

Among the nine dead, one is a woman and four are men while the rest were yet to be identified, said Western Railway PRO Sharat Chandra. Four persons have sustained minor injuries, said police.

Officers said fire had been brought under control, however smoke inside the coaches made rescue work difficult.

Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relations officer, Western Railway said, "The guard noticed the fire and applied emergency brakes. The three coaches were isolated to prevent the fire from spreading. Rescue work is still underway."

Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 500,000 to the families of the dead. The Railway Board has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Last month, a fire raced through a train carriage packed with sleeping passengers in Andhra Pradesh, killing 26 people and forcing terrified passengers to smash windows in a frantic bid to escape.

Train 19019 from Bandra Terminus to Dehradun left Mumbai at 00.05 am Wednesday.
The helpline numbers are: 022 23011853 and 23007386.
